We are honoured to present to you the third Dutch Film Festival in Hong Kong. Like in previous years, we are delighted that we can offer movie lovers a broad range of cinematographic creations from the Netherlands.

These movies stand in a long tradition of Dutch film making. Since World War II Dutch cinema has made its international mark on several occasions. In 1959 Bert Haanstra became the first Dutch film maker to win an Oscar, with his short documentary GLASS, in which he adopted an impressionistic style to film the process of glass making.

Dutch feature films to win an Oscar were THE ASSAULT in 1986, ANTONIA’S LINE in 1995 and CHARACTER in 1997. And at the beginning of this year ELLE, directed by Dutch film director and producer Paul Verhoeven won 2 Golden Globe Awards, including best foreign movie.

The five movies will screen this year cater to a great variety of tastes.

THE FURY is a gripping story about the evolving relationship between a boy and his imposing aunt over the years.

A REAL VERMEER tells the story of Dutch painter and master forger Han van Meegeren from his beginnings as a rebellious young artist in the Amsterdam of the 1920s to his rise to infamy as one of the most ingenious art forgers of all time.

A NOBLE INTENTION a stubborn violin maker at the end of 19th Century Amsterdam who is fighting to keep his house and together with his pharmacist cousin cooks up a scheme hoping that everybody will benefit. With devastating consequences.

FAMILY WEEKEND a family gathers for what they expect to be a nice peaceful family weekend but their father’s announcement of his marrying plans changes everything.

RIPHAGEN : THE UNTOUCHABLE tells the true story of notorious gangster Andries Riphagen, one of the most dangerous criminals in the Netherlands during the Second World War.

The Dutch Film Festival is being organized in the framework of Dutch Days in April when we celebrate and showcase Dutch art and culture in the broadest sense of the word. Go to www.dutchdaysinhongkong.com to get more information!

A Real Vermeer - Dutch Film Festival
Based on true story, the film tells the story of a talented young painter, Han van Meegeren who is a rebel in the early 1920’s Amsterdam art scene; not because his work is avant-agrade but because he paints in the style of the Dutch Golden Age paintings.

Critics find his work old-fashioned and even call him a copycat. When he madly falls in love with the wife of Holland’s most important critic, he makes a powerful enemy who destroys his career. To take revenge, he sets out to produce a perfect fake Johannes Vermeer to fool the art world.

However, given the choice of revealing the truth and therefore, getting his revenge or keeping quiet and fighting for his love, he chooses the latter. Soon he is caught in a web of lies and deceit and his life spins out of control…
