HKIFF Cine Fan Programme(Sep - Oct)

Financially supported by the Hong Kong Film Development Fund and organised by the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society (HKIFFS), a two-year pilot repertory film programme “HKIFF Cine Fan Programme” was launched in April 2013, with the aim to enrich and deepen the experience of Hong Kong moviegoers, the programme features a variety of curated contemporary, retrospective and thematic showcases, presenting national cinemas, tributes to masters, digitally restored classics, and genre films while supporting Hong Kong films and film culture. Local and overseas filmmakers and critics are invited regularly to introduce films, attend meet-the-audience sessions, conduct seminars, and join panel discussions to facilitate cultural exchange across borders.

In conjunction with the programme, the HKIFFS has introduced Cine Fan, a special privilege scheme for cineastes to enjoy ticket discounts both for the programme, and also the annual Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF), the Summer International Film Festival (Summer IFF), and other associated programmes of the Society.

Raining Stones - HKIFF Cine Fan
Ken Loach fashions another hard-hitting tale about the school of hard knocks, but never forgets a sense of humor even in the most desperate situation. Bob Williams is on the dole. Out of work but is determined to buy his daughter a new dress for her first communion, he becomes embroiled in whatever ill-conceived scam is on offer, from rustling sheep to cleaning drains.

Then his van gets stolen and the loan sharks knock on the door. How on earth is he going to deal with it? No worries, with Loach, people are hanging on but in their spirits they are undefeated.

Riff Raff - HKIFF Cine Fan
Loach continues to find fertile ground - and plenty of comic potential - in the working man's struggle against Thatcherism. Stevie, a young Scot out of prison, finds a job as a brickie and hooks up with an Irish singer Susan.

His co- workers are running scams and romps, and no one gives a damn about his left-wing views. Until one day some workers are sacked and severely injured in the building site, Stevie decides to strike back.

Based on scriptwriter Bill Jesse's own experience as a construction worker, the film paints the gritty side of life, sparkling with wit, humor and bitter outrage.

The Wind That Shakes The Barley - HKIFF Cine Fan
In an Ireland seeking independence from Britain in the early 20th century, two brothers, Teddy and Damien, become freedom fighters, entering into a violent bloodshed with a vision of a new nation.

Yet treaties with Britain leave social dreams unrealized, dividing the nation anew and the brothers - Teddy favoring it as an incremental compromise, but Damien rejecting it as a sellout, resulting in a fratricidal war unto death.

Loach combines the epic sweep of this era with heartfelt sensitivity to intense personal struggles and sacrifices, and has no intention to hide his rage and denunciation of British beastliness and brutality.

The Parallax View - HKIFF Cine Fan
The second film in Alan J. Pakula’s unofficial paranoia trilogy of the 1970s, The Parallax View addresses many of the anxieties that the director would confront more directly in his Watergate follow-up,

All the President’s Men (1976). Warren Beatty stars as an ambitious journalist investigating the assassination of a US senator, who believes he has stumbled upon a secret organisation that recruits political assassins.

The closer he gets to the truth, the further he alienates himself from his editor and those around him, until he finds himself on the fringes of society, where those in authority appear the least trustworthy.

Collaborating again with cinematographer Gordon Willis, Pakula creates a suffocating vacuum, in which modern America becomes the most dangerous place of all.
