KIFF is Back!!

The Hong Kong Kids International Film Festival (KIFF) returns for the 2nd edition this summer, continue to bring 10 new and classic movies from around the world for kids and family to spend their holiday. We believe that films are a powerful medium to enrich cultural learning and inspire young minds. KIFF’s vision is not only to encourage children to watch films on big screens, but also learn to appreciate films from different cultures, which in turn will ignite their imagination, nurture their creativity, and broaden their minds.

The Festival will be held from July 28 to August 5 at The Grand. KIFF is proud to announce award-winning actress Ms Karena Lam as Ambassador for this year.

Karena Lam, a renowned actress and mother of two, expresses her excitement and pleasure of being this year’s Ambassador. “I think the best thing about KIFF is that the films are not commonly seen in Hong Kong. Parents can build a communication bridge with children through movies. I hope everyone can leave their worries behind and enjoy themselves in the world of cinema,” she enthuses.

Karena believes that “think out of the box” is an important message conveyed by KIFF, she explains, “Films allow us to dream, which is significant to adults and kids. I hope that everyone can ‘dream a little’ by indulging in the cinematic world, and to bring the hope, dream, and imagination in movies into your daily life.”

Karena has also showed her enthusiasm by involving in the film selection. She picked Supa Modo”, a Kenyan superhero film produced by acclaimed German filmmaker Tom Tykwer. Lam lauds, “There is no fancy special effects in ‘Supa Modo’, but it is a film full of hope. It follows the story of a six-year-old girl who is terminally ill, she is a wonder girl and her courage will move you.”

Featuring 10 Internationally Acclaimed Kids Movies

KIFF will showcase 10 brand new and classic movies from around the world, ranging from dramas, comedies, animations to inspirational stories based on true events, many of which have garnered awards and nominations from international film festivals.

The exciting lineup includes: Opening Film “Distinction” (Hong Kong), Ambassador’s Choice – Berlin Crystal Bear winner “Supa Modo” (Germany/Kenya), Classic Movie – multiple Academy Awards winning “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” (USA), Hamburg Film Festival Michel Award nominee “Ballad from Tibet” (China), César Awards winner “The Big Bad Fox and Other Tales” (France), Academy Awards and Golden Globes nominee “The Breadwinner” (Canada/Ireland/Luxemborg), Berlin Crystal Bear nominee “Cleo & Paul” (France), “Hero Steps” (Columbia), Berlin Crystal Bear nominee “Tesoros” (Mexico), and Closing Film “Hotel Transylvania 3: A Monster Vacation” (USA).

The usual cinema environment probably is a challenge for children as kids are sensitive to loud noise or scared of the dark, to make first time moviegoing more enjoyable for kids and parents. "The Big Bad Fox and Other Tale" offer special screenings will feature increased auditorium lighting as well as quieter volume, so as to soothe the possible uncomfortable feelings of kids.

Post-screenings Sharing with Diverse Guest Speakers

We believe movies deliver different messages and educational meanings, which can evoke discussions and stimulate thinking. Through films, parents can imbue kids with the correct values and knowledge more effectively.

Like last year, there will be a 15-minute post-screening sharing for each KIFF screening, hosted by veterans or professionals from the film, cultural or educational industries. Through sharing and discussion, children can have a better understanding of the messages and meanings behind the films, enhance their interest in cinema and help them develop a habit of critical thinking. All sharings will be conducted in Cantonese. For detailed information and the list of guest speakers, will announce later!

Tesoros - Kids IFF 2018
The Pacific coastal village of Barra de Potosí in Mexico is a tropical idyll which captivated the British privateer Sir Francis Drake who landed on its coast 400 years ago. Seven-year-old Dylan, who has just moved there with his family, believes he can find Drake's treasure and sets off with his new friends on a marvellous journey of discovery in search of long lost pirate loot. Shot simultaneously with two cameras and available light, and relying on the child actors’ improvisations and the idea of film as a game, the film captures the childlike wonder of discovering a brand new world.

The Big Bad Fox And Other Tales - Kids IFF 2018
The countryside isn't always as calm and peaceful as it's made out to be, and the animals on this farm are particularly agitated: a fox who mothers a family of chicks, a rabbit who plays the stork, and a duck who wants to be Santa Claus. If you think life in the country is a walk in the park, think again! Adapted from the acclaimed graphic novel into a delirious, delightful triptych of interlocking stories. Underneath the gags (and there are plenty of them), this animated feature offers a sensitive and beautiful portrayal of family, and the anxieties of modern life.
